16 Beautiful Marble Kitchen Countertops

Marble is a classic material for kitchen countertops, backsplashes, and central islands that will lend timeless good looks to any style kitchen, from the most traditional to the ultra-contemporary. But this noble, high-quality material has its pros and cons and requires more maintenance than some other finishes to keep it looking its best.

Marble is heat-resistant, but to help keep a marble countertop looking its best, piping hot pots and pans should be placed on top of a kitchen towel, pot holder, or trivet to protect the stone. It is also advisable to use a cutting board rather than chopping directly on a marble surface to avoid scratching it.

Marble is also porous, which means spills of liquids like red wine that are not immediately cleaned up can stain. Experts advise sealing a marble countertop yearly to make it more resistant to stains and light scratches.

FAQ
  • Are marble kitchen countertops a good idea?

Marble kitchen countertops will add timeless beauty to any style space. But they do require more maintenance to keep them looking their best and are more prone to stains and scratches than some other materials due to their porous nature.

  • Is marble better than quartz for a kitchen?

The jury is out on this one. Purists like marble for its timeless good looks and quality, whereas an increasing number of people choose quartz, which can look like marble but is low-maintenance and less prone to wear and tear.

  • Is marble less expensive than granite?

Generally, no. According to HomeAdvisor, while both stones are somewhat expensive, marble is considered the ultimate in luxury and is usually more expensive than granite. They estimate that marble costs between $40 to $100 per sq. ft., whereas granite costs between $40 to $60 per sq. ft.

  • Does marble scratch easily?

Marble does scratch easily. If this bothers you, be sure to always use a cutting board rather than using the countertop as a prep surface. Sealing your marble countertop yearly will make it more resistant to light scratches (and stains). You can buff out light scratches on marble with a soft cloth.
